US Lighting Tech - The Jersey Series Roadway Lighting

Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) partnered with US Lighting Technologies (USLT) of Irvine, California, in developing a solution to replacing obsolete mercury vapor street lights. Listening to PSE&G's street lighting team feedback, USLT's design and engineering team developed an innovative cobra head replacement that delivers utility grade performance with contemporary styling. The fixture is called "The Jersey" and features a contemporary housing with proprietary heat dissipation functionality, utility grade latching and hinging components.

To choose its technology and the partner to supply that technology, PSEG completed a comprehensive study of all street lighting technologies on nine criteria. These criteria included, energy efficiency, light output, quality of light, lifecycle maintenance and the financial strength to ensure delivery. After its careful analysis, PSEG exclusively selected induction technology and exclusively USLT to supply the technology for Phase I of their multi-year project.

PSE&G had completed a rigorous evaluation of new green high efficiency street lighting technologies and elected to deploy induction lighting as its technology of choice. The criteria for the selection included full compliance with all regulations and laws regarding lumen output but also offered significant energy and maintenance savings.

PSE&G will invest $50 million to provide the energy efficient street lighting to the municipalities in its service area. The lighting change-out is part of a $700 million capital program designed to stimulate the economy and provide jobs over two years by accelerating electric and gas infrastructure projects.

PSE&G recently began installing energy-efficient streetlights in over 200 municipalities across the state in an effort that could save towns nearly $1 million annually on lighting bills and a reduction of nearly 21,000 tons of carbon dioxide gases and 45,000 megawatt hours annually.

When the project has been completed PSE&G will have replaced over 96,400 of the less-efficient mercury vapor lights with the new induction fluorescent lights. PSE&G is the first utility in the nation to provide these particular fixtures.

"This program is a win-win for the communities we serve," said Ralph LaRossa, president and COO of PSE&G. "It brings a new green source of lighting to our neighborhoods as it provides some relief to municipal budgets."

Over the first 8 months of Phase I of the project, USLT and PSE&G have partnered to deliver and install over 60,000 fixtures throughout New Jersey. Phase I is projected to finish ahead of schedule by 4 months.
